It is sometimes activated even when the object or phenomenon does not arouse our spontaneous interest but must still be taken into consideration because it is necessary.<\/p>\n<p><em>Directed attention<\/em> <strong>always requires a great expenditure of psychic energy<\/strong>. When subjected to intense and prolonged demands, <strong>it becomes exhausted<\/strong> and the subject struggles to maintain concentration: distractibility increases and <strong>impulsive and hostile behaviour can also arise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The condition of mental fatigue also exposes the individual to a greater risk of experiencing <strong>psycho-physiological stress<\/strong>, because he or she has fewer cognitive resources to deal adequately with the stressful situation.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]For successful daily functioning, <strong>the human being needs to restore the attentional capacity<\/strong>; sleeping is a rather common way of dealing with mental fatigue, but it is an effective but temporary remedy. <strong>For a complete recovery from mental fatigue, it is necessary not only to rest direct attention, but to regenerate it<\/strong>, and this is only done by making it temporarily unnecessary <strong>through the (alternative) use of involuntary attention<\/strong>: <strong><em>fascination.<\/em><\/strong> (Berto, 2005)[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;8614&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Involuntary attention<\/em>. <\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What is special about <em>involuntary attention<\/em> is that it <strong>requires no effort<\/strong> on the part of the exerciser, <strong>is resistant to fatigue and is activated spontaneously<\/strong> when the environmental context permits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Nature exerts such a powerful fascination in human beings that inv<em>oluntary attention<\/em> is effortlessly activated.<\/strong><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]According to ART (<em>Attention Restoration Theory <\/em>; Kaplan, 1995), <strong>stimulating the use of involuntary attention by being in contact with the natural environment<\/strong>, which is inherently rich in <em>soft fascination stimuli<\/em> (sunset, light reflections, windblown leaves, animals), <strong>is an effective way to regenerate directed attention<\/strong> and ensure good cognitive functioning.<\/p>\n<p>Soft fascination anchors attention, but leaves room for personal reflection. Natural environments are a source of <em>soft fascination<\/em>; in these environments, <strong>attention is captured by aesthetically pleasing stimuli that relax and encourage reflection<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nature, unlike the city, is full of stimuli that are interesting in themselves and do not require much mental effort.
